Conclusion

My project is finished, everything is handed in. My head hurts from writing so much for all 3 lectures, now that I’m free I can enjoy the company of my friends at hand in day. Hopefully next year we can meet up and do this again but even though I’m proud of my model and cutlery. The misery, the stress, there’s that sad feeling I get when I do this 3D part. I don’t know why, maybe this is not for me. I really want to work in Texas for RoosterTeeth and I feel doing 3D for my own project show for them or working on their content could gain me a slot. Even though working there is a dream, I really want to be qualified enough to live that dream but is that all that is, a dream? Do I lack the passion for 3D work, I love to design the character but to get my hands dirty. Year 2 will answer that, I’ll truly know then but for now I’ll try and stay positive … plus we get Mark next year woohoo.




The Long Road to my Final Hand-In: PART 2


For my body I used a box with 5 lines going landscape around the shape, 3 going down the left and right, finally one going through the middle (front view). The 5 will let me move each row to the crucial parts of the body from neck to waist. With X-Ray and the planes, I can stretch and move each row (front and side) to match with the picture to get a rough version of my body. The 3 on either side will be used to create a gap to extrude one of my arms and a stomp and leave enough room for my body to mold with them when turbo smoothed. For the waist I added multiple connected lines to create more dots and switching to bottom view to place each dot around the guide lines so it stays with in it.
For the pecks I selected squares on either side of the chest (front view) to inset and extrude them out slightly, with turbo smooth on and a connected line down the middle of each peck I shaped them to try and get them as natural as I can, I think I did a good job. For the neck I did the exact same as the waist, I extruded it up, switched to top view and placed the dots around the guide lines to keep them within it. This then connected to the head to bring me half way done.
For the chest armor, I used the same technique as the visor, stretched and shaped each piece to fit on the model. The belt was a box shape extruded into multiple segments and on editable poly, I used the dot tool the drag each row down to mold over the shoulder and to the back.
For the arms and stomp, I extruded them out of the gaps and for each extrude I highlighted both rows of dots to fit it around the drawing. After repeating the technique I reached the bottom of the middle row. Same as the body I switched to side view, then shaped the arm before adding one connected line down the arm to drag it and curve the arm. This makes it look natural. The same technique was done to shape the stomp.
The last part was the legs, on my sketch book piece by piece I had it all planned out so I’ll go through them quickly to finish this. The two parts of the waist where made of cylinders to create a smooth plate for his body to rest on. For the crotch, it was a box extruded down and on the sides I selected most of the squares to extrude -4cm to create enough room for his hips to move around as he walks. The hips were cylinders but inseted slightly and extruded -1cm back. The quad was the same as the crotch but it was just a box shape and the only extrusions were the details on the front and back. To be honest I thought the leg would look rather dull but the skins did change that.
For the shins/ankles, it was the same as the quad but a lot wider to keep him balanced as he runs and walks. The last challenge was the feet that were easily done, increasing the amount of dots on the cylinder for each individual toe, I changed to bottom view and placed each point as accurate as I could around the guide lines and when that was done I changed back to front view to change the shape of the upper part. This will fit into the ankles well. Exhausted after finishing it, I Googled realistic images to skin the object and stick to the group choice of a more realistic look for our characters. Troubles came when the skins stretched in weird ways probably due to the turbo smooth stretching some curves.
To my rescue Sylvian offered to help me skin it and send it back. Even though it still had the same stretch problems, it came back with an even better result. Now all I can do is print this out on A3 and wait for Jaime to create a group photo.





The Long Road to my Final Hand-In: PART 1


My character is done so now Ill go over briefly each part of the process, like somewhat of a tutorial. I followed the instructions on the tutorial I downloaded on setting up my planes but I have a grid to stick to so I placed the front picture behind the grid (front view) and the side picture (side view) inside the grid in the middle. Neither will be seen on either view.
I started with the first attempt of the head, I created a side profile with the line tool and created a lathe for the head. With an editable poly tool were I select a square it goes all red, I choose the squares where the eyes will be and dragged out a clone using shift to create my visor. To make the visor thicker I used extrude and sized it to fit on the face.
With that done I followed my drawing and extruded a box shaped around the upper lip and nose of my character, this will be used to hold the horn and buck teeth. After extruding, I got the shape my upper lip done and with the dot editable poly tool I grabbed the rows on either side and dragged the dots down slightly to get a curve. After that I selected half the nose and deleted it, so I can then place symmetry on it to get an even shape nostril. For the nostril I selected the middle squares on my shape and used inset to about 1cm and finally extruded -10cm back to create the breathing hole of the nostril. Doing this will produce a clean result when turbo smoothed and not stretch it badly. Pretty much the same was done for the bottom lip/jaw except for the nostril part. Teeth were boxes with curved bottoms using extrude, all I had to do was clone 3 more teeth, then make 2 teeth bigger than the original size and finally put them in line with the plane.
Ears where simple, following the plane by taking the box I had created and extrude till I get a pointy edge. I then added 5 connected lines down creating more points, I could then follow Justin’s spoon tutorial to create a giant gap curve in the middle. I selected the middle 2 rows of dots, opened soft selection and clicked ‘use soft selection’ to drag a gap in the middle but get a clean result out of it, there will be no noticeable lines. I thought my head was done but I then learned lathes don’t accept skins, so I had to go back to my sketchbook and redesign my head for a box tool and extrude it. Following the plane was actually easy, I kept extruding and shaping but for the curve in the middle, the top and the bottom I had to bevel it till it reached the top.
With the 3x3x3 I stretched and curved the head keeping within the grid and leaving room for my face details. Same method again for the visor accept it was a lot easier due to having fewer lines. The horn was made out of a cone but it looked unnatural, so I slimed the width (side view) and selected each row of dots to curve it around the head and touch the top of the grid. I need a break from writing, my head hurts.



Final Preparations


Wow there is lots to cover before creating my character, it’s been weeks so I guess I can start with our second presentation. During Wrestlemania weekend (As discussed by the group) I drew 3 pages of development sketches and created a profile of him. He will be related with Sylvian’s character as a love interest but she hates him and for the rest of the day we discussed our project. We now talk to each to each other now on Skype as a group named ‘Group of Almighty Evils’.
Following a tutorial on Youtube I found out how to make a body with my knowledge of making the head which I’ll discuss sometime soon. Before starting I did 2 drawings front and side of my character fitting into the grid, this will be used for a plane. Then I drew out my plan for extruding and building each body part. I’m sorry I really need to stop, I’m starting to panic and getting impatient because I want my character done and out of the way, there’s so much to do.


Unknown Presentation


Last week with me missing class and Kayleigh telling me almost everything, I walked in finding out we have a group presentation. I had no idea so I had no slide but I did have drawings and I know that’s not good enough, it was something though. Presentation went well but we have to do it again with profiles, so our group gathered together to discuss our characters to fit our theme of freaks and monsters. Nathan’s Character was named ‘The Creator’ of all our characters, I came up with the idea of our names being our test numbers. We came together well and left with lots of great ideas. My character will be an Aggressive muscle bound Rhino with tiny robotic legs for humour.
